Vita
“All of life is a stage – an exciting, perilous adventure that demands your whole concentration. I’m at home in each of the performing arts, whether opera, theatre, operetta, musical, song recital, film, or performance.“ Paul Schweinester
Opera and Operetta
Internationally acclaimed Austrian tenor Paul Schweinester is familiar with all areas of classical music, both at home and on international stages. As a result, he considers it an enormous honor to sing in Vienna, where this season will see him in four new projects, the first being a premiere with Laurent Pelly‘s Volksoper production of “Le Voyage dans la Lune” by Jacques Offenbach in October, after which he is scheduled to perform the role of Don Achise in “La Finta Giardiniera” by W.A. Mozart at the Theater an der Wien. In between, Paul will be singing “Das Lied von der Erde” by Gustav Mahler under the baton of Emanuel Tjeknavorian in the beautiful Mozartsaal of the Vienna Konzerthaus. The fourth project will take place at the Goldener Saal of the Musikverein Wien, where he will be performing an exquisite repertoire from the roaring 20ies and 30ies at the prestigious Philharmoniker Ball 2024 alongside the Orchestra Divertimento Viennese.
Additionally, Paul‘s international concert season will include “Carmina Burana” at the Casa da Música Porto, conducted by Stefan Blunier, and the role of Kunz Vogelsang as part of an acclaimed cast of singers in a new springtime production of Wagner‘s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” staged by Laurent Pelly at the Teatro Real de Madrid. Paul‘s latest season started with a debut at the Opera Straßbourg, where he played the role of Der Narr in Franz Schrecker‘s opera “Die Schatzgräber”. Directly afterwards, he performed at the Theater an der Wien in Menotti‘s “Amahl and the Nightly Visitors” in a production directed by Stefan Herheim before appearing as Sam Borzallino in Korngold‘s “Die Stumme Serenade” in the spring. Other highlights from recent years include his performances at the Palais Garnier in Paris and the Salzburg and Bregenz Festivals. Besides that, he embodied the main role in Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” at the Seefestspiele Mörbisch in 2021, where he had already sung the role of Adam in Carl Zeller’s “Der Vogelhändler” four years before.
A new artistic goal approached Paul Schweinester at the Mozartwoche 2023 for which, in his first foray into the creative field, he not only wrote the play “Der alte Baum oder Franzis Reise bis ans Ende der Welt”, but also directed it to the music of W.A. Mozart, an accomplishment that earned him the honor of being highlighted at the Marionettentheater Salzburg. This success has resulted in a projected revival of the play at the Mozartwoche 2025 and an ensuing tour of “Der alte Baum” through Central Europe.
A CD recording of Entführung aus dem Serail, together with Diana Damrau and Rolando Villazón, was released on Deutsche Grammophon in fall 2016. Its success led to a second collaboration, in which Paul Schweinester recorded the role of Monostatos in The Magic Flute.

Contemporary
Opera
The singer/performer relishes the challenges of contemporary opera: he is debuting at the Philharmonie de Luxembourg in the Atlantis Code by German Composer Frank Schwemmer. At Theater an der Wien he appeared as Toni in Elegie für junge Liebende and sang the part of Josef Powolny in Friedrich Cerha’s Onkel Präsident at the Prince Regent Theater in Munich. He also sang François Deschamp’s Jean und Gilles at the Sirene Operntheater in Vienna.
Concert
Paul Schweinester’s numerous appearances with renowned orchestras and conductors are a testament to his international appeal. For Easter 2022 he performs J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion at the Hercules Saal in Munich. He performed Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Gaechinger Cantorey under the direction of H. C. Rademann at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus, the Gasteig in Munich, the Stuttgart Liederhalle, and at the International House of Music in Moscow. On New Year’s Day 2018 he sang Haydn’s The Creation in the Bela Bartok Hall in Budapest. He toured Spain and France, singing the St Matthew Passion with the Musiciens du Louvre under Mark Minkowski. He also performed Mozart’s Requiem with Paul Langrée and the Camerata Salzburg in Colombia.
Art Song
Paul Schweinester has a passion for Lieder. Concerts at the NDR Studios in Hamburg, Jeunesse in Vienna, the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg, the Brahms Festival in Mürzzuschlag, and the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York are proof of the depth of his commitment to the genre. The singer is featured with his own adaptation of “Die schöne Magelone” by Johannes Brahms in Wien and Innsbruck.

Ballroom Music
„Il giovanotto matto“
Orchester Divertimento Viennese, conducted by V. Praxmarer
Performing sophisticated dance music at the magnificent balls of Vienna is another of the singer’s regular occupations; he has appeared at the Philharmonic Ball, the Kaffeesiederball, the Kaiserball, and many others. Backed by the orchestra Divertimento Viennese, Paul Schweinester enchants ballrooms with classics from the 20s and 30s such as “Für eine Nacht voller Seligkeit” and “Die Nacht ist nicht allein zum schlafen da”. This is music close enough to touch.
Die schöne Magelone
A very special presentation of “Die Schöne Magelone“: These poems, set to music by Johannes Brahms, are supplemented by a staged reading conceived exclusively for the occasion. The listener accompanies the young protagonist on an emotional journey through the world of his own feelings, on the dangerous path to fulfilling love…
The stage: a codex through
which my person
is transformed into art.
